Nigerian music executive and producer, Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has responded to allegations of favouritism levelled against his record label, Mavin Records, stating that the claims are untrue.
He spoke during an appearance on the Crea8torium podcast, where he explained that artists under the label often decide when and how frequently they release music.
According to Don Jazzy, it would make no business sense for a record label to invest in an artiste and then deliberately refuse to promote them in favour of another act.
“We do see lots of comments that we do not prioritise some artists. But that isn’t true. It’s like I would just carry my money and just throw it away, just lock it inside somewhere. We obviously, invest in people to make us and themselves money.
“So, the idea that we would have artists and not want to prioritise them is not real. If you see an artist in Mavin and the artist only releases one or two songs in a year, just know that it is the artist’s decision,” he stated.
The music producer also said that in some cases, artists delay releasing songs because they struggle with imposter syndrome and overthinking.
”If the artist has 1 million songs and they want to release them, we can release them. Most of them actually have imposter syndrome. It’s normal. We are all human beings, so sometimes they can panic and overthink things. But there is no such thing as prioritising one artist over another,” he said.
