Demographic dividend can only be achieved if… — UNFPA

United Nations Funds for Population Activities (UNFPA) has said that demographic dividend can only be achieved if state actors work together and support each other for a better outcome.

The assertion was made by the Head of Office, Kaduna state office of UNFPA, Lloyd Umkomgo during the opening of a Two -day capacity building for officials of the State Ministries, Departments and agencies (MDAs) on demographic dividend to accelerate economic growth and Development.

Lloyd Umkomgo stressed the importance of demographic dividend in achieving set objectives of growth and development as it will give near-accurate data of population needed.

In his presentation on the concept of demographic dividend, UNFPA Assistant Representative, Dashe Dasogot said that the strategies for demographic dividend include child Survival, childbirth spacing, and girl-child education among other things.

He added that the main contribution of demographic dividend is a massive growth in GDP and will put the country on the path of sustainable development, reduce unemployment, increase asset acquisition, and wealth increase.

Earlier, Permanent Secretary, Bauchi State Ministry of Health, Ali Babayo Gamawa said that the demographic dividend would support the state in formulating its policies and programmes.

According to him, “Demographic dividend is a tool for generating statistics and feedback mechanisms in the state.”

Also speaking, Permanent Secretary, Bauchi State Ministry for Budget and Economic Planning, Saleh Idris Giade said that the objective of the workshop was to build the capacity of Directors to develop potentials for harnessing demographic dividend in the state.

The Permanent Secretary said, “For countries aspiring to harness demographic dividend,they must target policy investment in equitable and inclusive health care services (sexual and reproductive health), education and skills development “.

“Other targeted investments are: Education, skills Development, governance, youths participation and employment and entrepreneurship,” he said.

The 2-day capacity building meeting was organised by the Bauchi State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for officials of the state ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) on demographic dividend to accelerate economic growth and Development.
