The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), South-South Zone, has described Cross River as one of Nigeria’s peaceful and secure states, attributing the prevailing calm to the policies of the administration of Governor Bassey Otu.

The union made the declaration during a visit to the state Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, in Calabar, as part of activities marking its zonal meeting hosted by the state.

Speaking on behalf of the NUJ national President, the South-South Zonal Vice President, Opaka Dokubo, commended the cordial relationship between the government and the media, noting that Cross River’s peaceful atmosphere distinguishes it from many parts of the country grappling with insecurity.

Dokubo said the state’s stable security environment has created favourable conditions for economic activities, tourism, investment and media practice.

“Cross River remains a haven of peace and development. At a time when insecurity has become a major concern across many parts of Nigeria, the state continues to stand out as a place where residents and visitors can live, work and move freely without fear,” he said.

He added that the prevailing peace reflects the confidence of the people in government and the positive impact of policies aimed at improving their welfare.

The zonal leadership of the NUJ also thanked the government for restoring electricity to the NUJ secretariat in Calabar, describing the intervention as a major boost to journalism practice in the state.

Responding, the commissioner, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, reaffirmed the Otu administration commitment to strengthening collaboration with the media and pledged to advocate improved infrastructure for the union.

Ekpang described Cross River as one of the safest destinations in Nigeria, attributing the state’s security to deliberate investments by the government in safeguarding lives and property.
