There is no doubt that the Covid-19 pandemic came as a rude shock to most countries of the world including Nigeria. However it is trite to state that the ugly pandemic came as a test of time and space to ascertain how far we’ve truly gone as a nation in developing the human and non human resources in the Nigerian state.
Beyond reasonable doubt, the Covid-19 pandemic has revealed clearly the dysfunctional state of most sectors in the country. What should we say about the worrisome state of the Nigerian health sector today? No wonder Nigerian leaders often take solace in seeking medical treatments abroad. If efforts had been made over the years to bring into conformity with a standard, our health system, perhaps, Nigerian leaders wouldn’t seek medical treatments abroad and who knows may be the death of many could have been averted.
Now, the stone that was initially rejected by the builders has come to be a cornerstone. The same health institutions that the Nigerian government failed to develop over the years is where they are being taken care of today.
The fact remains that there is no better place like the home, no matter how pleasurable the outside world may be. Thus, it becomes necessary to question the commitment of Nigerian leaders in recent years to making Nigeria a better abode. The recent drop in the oil sector as a result of the deadly pandemic is a subtle reminder to our leaders that we shouldn’t put all our eggs in one basket as a nation, as a matter of necessity, there is need to re-develop all other sectors if truly we would cross the poverty line.
The time has come for Nigerian leaders to take responsibility in developing the Nigerian state. Arguably, developing Nigeria is assuredly developing the future generations to come into a valued protector of our dear country.
Amidst other factors, purposeful leadership is important to achieving not only a consolidated democracy but also a sustainable development in the Nigerian state. The Federal government should take into cognizance the need to embrace human capital investment as the educational sector of the country calls for an urgent intervention.
The vision to having a better Nigeria must be clear and the path to achieving this must be strictly defined. Nigeria as the giant of Africa should be a beacon of hope for other developing nations.
