Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has announced the extension of the partial lockdown of the state for another two weeks as part of measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 in the state.
In the same vein, the governor said that the state’s 2020 budget has been cut down from N195 billion to N191 billion to address the possible economic recession that may accompany the global pandemic.
Governor Ortom disclosed this while briefing newsmen at the end of the State Executive Council meeting, as well as an expanded meeting of the State Action Response Committee on Coronavirus.
Ortom said that the curfew from 7 pm to 6 am placed on the state still stands, adding that the government will continue to put up measures to protect the lives of the people.
He said that state will at the moment explore its comparative advantage as the “Food Basket of the nation” by encouraging the people of the state to go into massive cultivation of food.
The governor said that already, a strategic committee headed by himself had been set up to actualise this.
In his words, “the committee will look at the entire agricultural value chain to ensure that there is enough food for the people, as well as an increase in the internally generated revenue of the state. We are taking reactive steps to ensure compliance by the people.
“We will continue to appeal and advise them to comply with the measures put in place by the government because the state does not have the capacity for palliative measures in the event of a total lockdown. We have also, in view of the current realities, reviewed our budget of 195 billion naira to 191 billion naira.”
