The Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in Asaba and Warri, Delta State have a combined capacity of 40,000 standard cubic metres of gas per day, enough to serve more than 2,000 vehicles, including tricycles.
This was disclosed by the Project Manager of NIPCO Gas Limited, Achibe Victor Attah, at the inauguration of the stations, adding that the company was proud to pioneer CNG technology in the country.
Attah attributed the rising cost of petrol and diesel to factors such as subsidy removal, global tensions and stressed that CNG offers a more stable and cost-effective alternative.
He commended the government for its proactive approach, as the state is among the first to embrace such a partnership.
“Delta took a bold step by approaching us for this collaboration. While these two stations may not be sufficient, they represent a strong beginning and we are open to further expansion,” he said.
Declaring the facilities open, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, described the initiative as a critical foundation for the state’s transition to CNG-powered transportation.
The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Kingsley Emu, noted that the idea of introducing CNG buses and tricycles was conceived over a year ago, stressing that building the right infrastructure was essential before implementation.
“Without this infrastructure, we cannot achieve our goals. This station represents a fundamental building block for the CNG programme in the state,” he said.
The governor said that the stations in Asaba and Warri marked the beginning of a broader rollout, as the government is open to partnerships that will expand CNG infrastructure across the state.
He said Delta’s size and growing population require multiple stations to ensure accessibility, adding that beyond dispensing gas, the stations will also offer vehicle conversion services, enabling more residents to switch from petrol-powered vehicles to CNG.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Transport, Mr Onoriode Agofure, described the project as a game-changer, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidies.
He explained that CNG provides a more affordable alternative to Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), making it beneficial for both individuals and businesses.
This initiative is a major step towards a more sustainable, affordable and eco-friendly future. It reflects our commitment to cleaner energy and reduced transportation costs,” he said.
