ANA inducts traditional ruler, ex-UniAbuja VC, 30 others as fellows No fewer than 32 eminent Nigerian writers were on Thursday inducted as fellows of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).
Amongst the inductees is King Bubaraye Dakolo, who is the Ibenanaowei of Ekpetiama Kingdom and Chairman of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council as a fellow of the prestigious association.
Also inducted are Professor Nuhu Omeiza Yaqub, a former Vice Chancellor of University of Abuja; Dr. Bayo Adebowale; Prof. Sunny Ijirhevwe Awhefeada, Prof. Emmanuel Dandaura, Prof. Joy Eyisi, and the pioneer editor of Blueprint Newspaper, Malam Ibrahim Sheme among others.
The induction was held at the ongoing 2023 ANA international convention at Mamman Vatsa Writer’s Village, Abuja.
Speaking at the induction, the President of ANA, Camillus Ukah, said the ANA fellowship has never been for sale, saying the honour is bestowed on only those who deserve it.
“We honour those who have worked for the promotion of Nigerian literature and we are convinced today that you are all worthy,” he said.
He said as writers, it takes commitment to do what they have been doing.
He said, “We have made immense sacrifices to come here at a time when the roads are difficult and the cost of living is high. It takes commitment to do what we have done and we all deserve the gratitude of the association.
“On a day like when we have decided to induct new fellows into our prestigious association, we are reminded of the sacrifices that have brought us this far and sacrifices that the future requires.”
He, therefore, charged the new inductees not to hesitate in owing the association in building the critical mass for future service.
He added, “Our business is the development of our nation-state through literary excellence.”
Speaking shortly after the induction, King Dakolo said: “I feel really cool about it. Coming from fellow Africans, coming from Nigerians, I shall value it far beyond the Prize of the European Chemist called Sir Alfred Nobel.”
He also assured the association on behalf of other inductees that they would do everything possible to work harder.
The traditional ruler also noted that the induction is an hour and a call to duty, which they have accepted.
He thanked the ANA executives for recognising their efforts at “telling our story, the African story, the Nigerian story, and the Niger Delta story”.
