Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will travel to Washington on Monday for talks with Donald Trump, following the United States president’s high-profile Alaska summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The meeting between Trump and Putin ended without a ceasefire deal, despite Trump initially saying he would be “unhappy” to leave without one.

Instead, he later posted on social media that ceasefires “often times do not hold up,” stressing that a permanent peace agreement is the only viable path to ending the war in Ukraine.

The shift is seen as a blow to Kyiv and its European allies, who had been pushing for an immediate ceasefire as a first step toward wider negotiations. Ukraine correspondent James Waterhouse noted that Trump’s rejection of the ceasefire option leaves Kyiv in a difficult position as the war grinds on.

In Kyiv, many Ukrainians expressed disappointment at the red carpet welcome given to Putin in Alaska, saying it left them feeling “crushed.”

Despite the lack of agreement, Trump insisted “progress was made” during the summit, while Putin said he was “sincerely interested” in ending the conflict.

Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington is now expected to be crucial in shaping Ukraine’s next steps as the war enters another uncertain phase.

The Alaska summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin ended without a ceasefire deal, marking a setback for Kyiv and its allies.

Trump later explained that he does not support temporary ceasefires, arguing that they rarely last, and instead pushed for a permanent peace settlement.

In Ukraine, many citizens were left disheartened by the red carpet welcome for Putin, saying it undermined their struggles.

Despite this, both Trump and Putin claimed progress was made and signaled willingness to continue talks.

Attention now shifts to Washington, where President Zelenskyy’s upcoming meeting with Trump is expected to play a critical role in defining Ukraine’s next moves in the ongoing war.
