After 5 weeks of virtual learning, OOU students return to classrooms

Students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, have returned to classrooms after five weeks of virtual learning in response to the current economic situation following removal of fuel subsidy.

During this period, students adapted to the challenges of virtual learning — attending lectures and participating in discussions through digital platforms.

Aziz Zainab, a 100-level student of Biology Education, expressed delight to be back on campus, lamenting how network issues and power supply frustrated her during the period.

She said, “I’m very excited about the physical class we resumed today because, during the virtual classes. I had network issues and a bad power supply so I couldn’t keep up with the rest of the class.”

Another student, Orebajo Eniola, 400-level Public Administration, said “we have a lot to cover in the curriculum before writing our final examination. But I feel good coming back here again to continue what we have been learning online before.”

According to Hamzat AbdulSalam, a penultimate student in the Mass Communication department described physical learning as the best for him.

“The form of learning where we get to see our lecturers face to face has always been the best form of learning to me which is why I’m thrilled to be back here on campus to unlearn, learn and relearn,” he said.

Meanwhile, the school management, had in a circular dated 1st September and addressed to all students, announced the commencement of virtual learning for 5 weeks, citing the economic hardship being faced in the country.

The circular reads; “l am to inform all Students that Lectures for the 2022/2023 Rain Semester will commence on Monday 4th September, 2023 as earlier scheduled and as approved by the University Senate, However, Lectures will be delivered VIRTUALLY to Students for the first five (05) Weeks of the Semester i.e. from Monday, 4th September to Friday, 7th October, 2023. Regular/Physical Lectures will commence thereafter.

“Senate, at its 424th Meeting held on Thursday, 31st September, 2023 took the decision above in order to ameliorate the current Economic hardships being encountered by Students in commuting to the University daily while praying that the situation will improve soon.

“Students are therefore advised to stay in their respective homes with their Parents and take full advantage of this opportunity.

“Students are also advised to take attendance at these Virtual Lectures seriously and participate as they would in Physical Lectures.”
