No fewer than 200 members of the ruling party in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a significant shift in the local political landscape ahead of the June 20 governorship election, according to observers.
The defectors were formally received at Odo Ayedun in Ikole Local Government by the ADC governorship candidate, Ambassador Dare Bejide, who used the occasion to outline his plans for the state.
Bejide expressed concern over the deplorable condition of the Ikole road, describing it as a major impediment to economic activities in the area.
He assured residents that fixing critical infrastructure would be a top priority if elected.
The ADC flagbearer also pledged to focus on improving the welfare of the people through enhanced electricity supply, accessible healthcare, quality education, and strengthened food security.

According to him, the party’s manifesto is people-oriented and designed to address the needs of all residents, irrespective of political or religious affiliations.
In his remarks, the Deputy Governorship Candidate, Chief Ayodeji Babatola, said the ADC administration would bring governance closer to the grassroots and ensure inclusiveness in decision-making processes.
Welcoming the new members, the Ekiti State Chairman of ADC, Ilesanmi Omolayo, assured them of equal rights and opportunities within the party, stressing that they would enjoy the same privileges as long-standing members.
Similarly, the ADC Chairman in Ikole Local Government, Olaiya Oluwasanjo, alleged that many communities in the area were yet to feel the impact of government, urging residents to rally support for Bejide’s candidacy.
A former Commissioner in the state, Chief Segun Akinwunmi, also criticised the lack of autonomy for local governments, noting that it has continued to undermine grassroots development, calling on voters to support the ADC in the forthcoming poll.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Bamidele Ologuntoye attributed their decision to join the ADC to the party’s internal democracy, structure, and vision for inclusive governance.
The defectors, who expressed confidence in the party’s chances, pledged to mobilise support and deliver Ikole Local Government for the ADC in the governorship election.
