Food does more than fill the stomach. Some of what we eat contains natural compounds that quietly support the body, especially in dealing with inflammation. Among them are flavonoids, plant chemicals known for their antioxidant effects. They are not rare or exotic. Many are found in foods already used in Nigerian homes.

Contents
  • Oranges
  • Onions
  • Apples
  • Tea
  • Berries

In this article, Tribune Online highlights 5 flavonoid-rich foods to fight inflammation

Oranges

Oranges contain flavonoids known as flavanones, including hesperidin and naringenin. These compounds are known for supporting blood vessels and improving circulation. They also help the body to manage oxidative stress, which is often linked to heart-related conditions.

Onions

Red onions, in particular, are rich in quercetin, one of the most studied flavonoids. Quercetin helps to reduce inflammation and also help in regulating blood pressure. It also has antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage. Interestingly, higher concentrations are found in the outer layers of the onion.

Apples

Apples contain a mix of flavonoids, including quercetin, catechins and flavonols. These compounds help to protect body cells and may reduce  the risk of chronic diseases. The skin of the apple holds a higher concentration of these nutrients, which is why eating it unpeeled is often recommended.

Tea

Tea is rich in catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate  (EGCG).

These compounds are known for their strong antioxidant activity. They help to  reduce inflammation and support the immune system.

Berries

Berries are rich in anthocyanins, the compounds responsible for their deep red, blue and purple colours. Anthocyanins are known for their anti-inflammatory effects and their role in supporting brain function and heart health. They also help to  protect the body against oxidative stress.
