Opposition parties under the national coalition have agreed to rotate the chairmanship of their meetings among member parties as part of efforts to promote equality and strengthen cooperation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision was contained in a statement signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties on Wednesday, September 17, 2026.
The agreement followed the inaugural meeting of the Central Leadership Committee, constituted at the August 31 Summit of Opposition Parties, which held on Wednesday, September 16.
According to the statement, members of the committee adopted a number of operational principles designed to guarantee equal opportunity, mutual respect and inclusiveness among the participating parties.

Under the arrangement, chairmanship of coalition meetings will rotate among the member parties in alphabetical order.
The coalition said the decision was consistent with its commitment to equality, stressing that its internal operations must reflect the principles upon which the alliance was established.
“A coalition founded upon equality must demonstrate equality in its own conduct,” the statement said.
The committee also reviewed the communiqué issued at the August summit and began the process of translating the resolutions reached at the meeting into concrete programmes and activities.
It gave particular attention to the operationalisation of the Publicity Committee, Legal Committee and five working groups established by the summit.
The participating parties agreed to forward the names of their nominees to the coalition’s Secretariat by the close of work on Friday, September 18.
The committees and working groups are expected to commence operations during the week of September 21 to 27.
The Central Leadership Committee also resolved to broaden the coalition by admitting other opposition parties that have indicated interest in joining the alliance.
The move is expected to further widen the platform and deepen cooperation among opposition parties as they work towards presenting a common front in the 2027 elections.
The committee is scheduled to hold its next meeting on Wednesday, September 23, and resolved to meet regularly as part of efforts to coordinate the activities of the coalition and strengthen collaboration among its members.
