A non-governmental organization (NGO), International alert and local partners in Zamfara State have disclosed that Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is alarming, saying violence against children is unacceptable.
Speaking on Tuesday, during a two-day training workshop for network members on conflict, Gender sensitivity and advocacy held at Command Guest House in Gusau, Fatima Inusa, Gender, Social Inclusive, International alert disclosed that as a result of the crisis and conflict currently experienced, GBV is on the alarming in the state.
“It is difficult to give the statistics of SGBV for now, we have issue of underreporting, but at least there is 2 to 3 cases of SGBV in a week reported across Zamfara State.”
Fatima Inusa further disclosed that the workshop was in collaboration with local partners that comprised Youths, women leaders, religious and community leaders and people with disability in the state.
“This training workshop was aim to build up awareness, improve capacity of local partners and stakeholders in the society to advocate to people that it’s ok to report SGBV cases”.
She said the training is to avail people to ensure there is a network for people with SGBV to know where they can report their cases and to whom they can make their report and services that are available towards the SGBV in the state.
“We are working with media people, police, lawyers and other key people in the community.”
Earlier, a local NGO in the state lamented the alarming violence against children, revealing that they will not accept violence against children, “children are now victims of violence, it’s unacceptable”.
During the workshop, over 30 participants were in attendance who were drawn across Zamfara State from women groups, Youths, religious leaders and local partners.
Both Mrs Lami chairperson women christian Association, Zamfara state and Shafaatu Labbo from voice of women and children initiative, Zamfara State expressed their delight over the collaboration workshop in the state.
According to them,both Muslims and christians should team and closely monitor their children to ensure the eradication of gender based violence in the state.
