Why 2021 IT Assembly focuses on digital tech —CPN President

Published by

PRESIDENT and chairman, Council of Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria), CPN, Professor Charles Uwadia, has said that COVID-19 pandemic has made the use of Information Technology more critical in effective teaching and learning as well as enhancing economic growth and development.

Uwadia said this in his remarks at the 2021 information technology professionals’ assembly held in Abuja where over 300 new members were inducted into the IT profession. The 2021 IT assembly has as its theme, “Harnessing Digital Technology for Social and Economic Recovery.”

He noted that in the last 15 months, the world had been gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic and that digital technology had proved beyond measure, its applicability in achieving efficiency in all sectors during the pandemic period, playing an indispensable role in sustaining social and economic activities.

According to him, challenges and risks also emerged in the course of embracing various digital innovations, saying drawing from global, regional, and national experiences, the 2021 IT professionals’ assembly highlighted the opportunities and challenges of building more innovations that could drive Nigeria’s economy.

He commended the Minister of Education, Malam AdamuAdamu for his support which has enabled the council to hold a good number of programmes while reassuring him of the resolve to continue to contribute the CPN quota to the development of the ministry and the realisation of its objectives.

He said: “We envisage that in the foreseeable years to come, Nigeria would have joined the rank of nations that have fully harnessed the potential of technological innovations to grow their national economies and uplift the standard and quality of life of their people.

“The impact of Information Technology on our national life in the past years has been incredible and phenomenal. It is for this reason that the 2021 IT professionals’ assembly would be considering how digital technology could be further harnessed for our much-needed social and economic recovery against the threat of the ravaging pandemic.

“There is no doubt that our profession – Information Technology has become a critical sector to the development of our nation in the current global situation. In fact, no meaningful development can take place without the Information Technology sector. This challenges us to be alive to our responsibilities as professionals and strive to be abreast of the dynamics and realities of today’s world.

“Our profession has evolved over the years, and should take the centre stage of national development; it should not only exist as a potential, but rather as an integral part of national development in line with global practices.
