What is endoscopy?

My brother has been scheduled for Endoscopy to confirm a long standing stomach problem. Kindly let me know what Endoscopy is and how it will help my brother considering the fact that the procedure is very expensive.

Either a very small incision or a natural entry, such as the mouth or anus, are used to insert the endoscope into the body. Endoscopy can be used to examine the inside of the body without requiring surgery. It can be used to diagnose and treat a variety of health conditions, such as disorders with the digestive, respiratory, and urinary tract systems. Depending on the part of the body being checked, different endoscopic procedures can be carried out. Even though the procedure may be expensive, it is considered very valuable in medical practice because of its accuracy in diagnosing ailments.
