UI mulls full migration to online mode

THE University of Ibadan says the gravitation towards online instructional mode now being embraced by increasing number of educational institutions had been a major plan of the institution even before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are indications that the university is mulling total migration to online learning for all its students after the pandemic and the industrial action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

According to information gleaned on the university’s website, the vice chancellor, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, is quoted as saying that university had been “planning and gradually moving online” even before the pandemic began.

“The University of Ibadan is a dual-mode university. Sixteen of our programmes are approved for distance learning under our highly regarded Distance Learning Centre (DLC),” he says.

The university has uploaded learning resources for newly admitted students covering seven faculties, and, according to the deputy vice chancellor (academics), Professor A. B Ekanola, “within 30 seconds of opening the learning portal, 40 students logged in to the website, and within five minutes, the number of students rose to 81.”

He said this is a clear demonstration of students’ readiness for the online mode of instruction.

Professor Olayinka said he had received requests from students who wanted to know how soon the university would begin e-learning for regular students.

As part of its preparations to migrate online, the university is said to have implemented what it called the complete Result Management System (RMS) during the 2018/2019 session, while its Senate has been prepped for the Learning Management System.

Recently, over 400 of the university’s academic staff were trained under the Pedagogical Leadership for Africa (PEDAL) Project led by the Partnership for African Social Governance Research (PASGR), Nairobi, Kenya with funding from the Department for International Development (DFID), UK.

The PEDAL project is a platform to revolutionise teaching; and a major integral part of the project is technology-enhanced teaching and learning.
