The killings in Katsina

After the initial euphoria that greeted the victory Muhammadu Buhari as president of Nigeria, we were also for once proud that one of our own is there to help us overcome our problems. Having retired as a military general, many believed that providing security for all would be the forte of President Buhari. He said at many instances that what Nigeria lacked was leadership. He also promised to provide that leadership. Our expectation was that leadership as he promised was to provide swift and decisive action which entailed emotional presence and motivation.

Unfortunately, the President’s home state, Katsina, is gradually becoming another major theatre of violence and has been a hotbed of killings by bandits and kidnappers. Across all regions of the country, misery, pain, poverty, hunger and trauma have become daily hallmarks of the average citizen’s life. Rampaging gangs of armed bandits have engaged in violent acts, attacking, abducting, killing, raping and robbing villagers and travelers, and engaging in cattle rustling.

The life of every Nigerian should be precious to the government and should be treated as such. What we need is an emergency response and a holistic review of the security framework with actions. The Federal Government must take the necessary steps to ensure that those found culpable of involvement in these crimes are punished.
