Tackle unemployment before delving into students loan, Tinubu urged

Published by

A Non Governmental Organisation, Excellence Community Education Welfare Sheme (ECEWS) has charged the Federal government to solve the problem of high unemployment rate before considering the implementation of student Loan scheme in Nigeria.

President Ahmed Bola Tinubu signed student loan Bill into law on June 12, 2023 with many praising the development.

However, Prof. Andy Eyo, the Chief Executive officer of ECEWS speaking in Abuja at the 22 Anniversary of the Organization lamented that the number of graduates being produced in Nigeria every year without job opportunities may hinder the repayment of these loans.

Eyo said “I have not really gone over the law yet, but I think the loan scheme for students is something that is available in many countries, it is in the United States too. But it can also be a challenge for us as a country because of the high rate of unemployment.

“What is the employment opportunity rate in Nigeria? How many graduates do the country produce annually? how are the students going to repay the loans? He asked.

“You have people who have graduated 10 years ago with no job, so there has to be a complementary action on the other end, so that students who use those loans and come out of school are able to repay them” he stated.

In the past 22 years, ECEWS has touched the lives of over 307, 545 people in about 9 states in the area of health, education and financial empowerment.
