Starch processor wants VCDP support on commercial cassava production

Published by

A cassava starch processor, Goke Adeyemi has called on the Value Chain Development Program (VCDP) to assist processors to expand their farms into commercial scale.

Adeyemi said this would serve as a back up for them who requires huge tons of cassava daily for starch processing.

Adeyemi who is the Chairman of Harvest Feed and Agro-processing (HFAP), located in Ogun State, stated this recently at the Commodity Alliance Forum, organised by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), VCDP.

Represented by one of the Managers in the company, Dolapo Adeyemi, Goke Adeyemi said he would also need assistance in land clearing.

“We want more from VCDP to support cassava processors to expand farms as back up and create commercial farming

“Help in Land clearing to open fresh cassava farms. Recall that Ogun State is in the rain forest zone, and land clearing is huge investment.

“Continue to assist your VCDP farmers to increase farm size from one hectare per farmer to 10 hectare per farmer.

“Intensify PPP (public private partnership model) to help in food security, commercialization of cassava, and grow our economy.

He explained that HFAP currently owns two cassava starch factories, in Ogun State.

“Our daily cassava consumption at 100% utilization is 300 MT cassava tubers. That is equivalent of 13 trailers of cassava tubers daily.

“In one year, our starch factories will require about 120,000 MT cassava tubers. This is very very huge.

We need more serious work to grow cassava, in commercial quantities. We also hugely generate employment.

“For Direct Employment, we have 300 workers. There are over 400 farmers that grow, sell and supply us cassava tubers.

He said so far, the factory only get about 10% of its cassava tubers requirement from Ogun State, while the remaining 90% is sourced from neighboring States.

“Here, VCDP can help to ensure we source 100% our cassava tubers requirement in Ogun State”, he added.
