Rape: Where is our conscience?

Published by

The tragedy of rape and killing of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa presented snippets of an already dying nation and more; the act is evil and completely unacceptable in a country where there’s law and order governing human conduct. In recent times, there have been incidences of violence but the circumstances of her death make this one saddening and entirely enraging.

The painful exertion that came with the travail of this victim nearly tears the social and mainstream media apart. It came almost as a rude shock to many people who are less expectant that such heinous act can still rear its head up; it was like a nightmare to some who could not just stop imagining that devilish beings disguised as human flesh are still in existence.

This tells us that we have lost our conscience and respect for the most revered place of worship. It’s a clear gesture that many have lost their sanity and humanity and are now left with heartlessness, disorderliness and brutality. This is an indication that females in our society are no longer valuable and cherished. The religion we seem to always put first in the mundane life is down the drain at this moment that we have tampered with that revered institution.

But one would continue to wonder that even with the total rejection of this terrible act; many went on social media to blame the victim, asking unnecessary questions like what’s she doing there alone? How did she dress? Why is she reading in the church and many questions putting blame on the victim, Is it that we have lost our sanity? Aren’t we humane anymore?

It’s also worrisome that the conflicting issue of rape is an excerpt of a dying nation. It sketches the graph of poor parenting style; the period most children are supposed to be taught ideals is considered as the period of youthfulness and they are not properly guided because it is believed they will outgrow such stages.

The negligence of the government in the area of security also contributes to this menace; nothing noteworthy has been done to assure the people of safety to their lives and belongings.

We can’t continue to have our girl child assaulted and brutalized the way we have seen miscreants did to Uwa and many other victims of rape. No one can explain the trauma incurred through rape, nothing kills the poor victims faster like the eternal emotional and psychological injury sustained in the heart. We must get our girl child liberated from sexual assault. We must rein in this anomaly at all cost so that it doesn’t happen anymore to our daughters, sisters, friends or our mothers. Anyone could be a victim.
