Oyo gets US support for EOC-COVID-19

THE government of the through Jhpiego, an international, non-profit health organisation affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University, is to assist the Oyo State government in setting up an Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) to improve its efficiency in curtailing the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

Jhpiego’s state coordinator, Mr David Akinpelu said this support to ensure the state’s EOC has a permanent site will also include the training of staff to ensure the centre becomes fully operational.

According to Mr Akinpelu, the three months support to the COVID-19 response in the state will also allow the centre offer more laboratory services.

“Part of the things earmarked for the development of the state’s EOC is that it has a centre from which its activities will be conducted. This centre must be well equipped that is why the US government is coming in here to support the proper establishment of the centre.

“Presently where they are using for EOC is considered not okay because it is at the centre of the state’s secretariat. For any meaningful work on COVID-19 to be done, it has to be an isolated environment so that it would also help to curtail infections too,” he said.

“Oyo government had given money to upgrade the former school of midwifery at Yemetu. Afterwards, Jhpiego with the support of the US government will come in with equipment and necessary items.”
