Ondo trader petitions IGP over alleged theft of his burnt vehicle

A rice merchant in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, Folorunso Afolabi, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Alkali Usman Baba over the alleged conspiracy, theft, malicious damage, and criminal conversion of his J-Boxer vehicle in Ondo town, the headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area in Ondo State.

The petitioner, Afolabi, represented by his solicitor, Gbenga Adedugbe & Co, appealed to the IGP to intervene in the case of the theft of his vehicle, which was burnt while transporting rice to his customers in Ore town. Afolabi is demanding the immediate arrest, investigation, and prosecution of those responsible for the theft of his burnt vehicle in Ondo town, which was subsequently taken to Abuja.

In the petition, the solicitor stated: “We write as solicitors to Mr Folorunso Afolabi (hereinafter called ‘our Client’), on whose express instructions we write to formally report the criminal activities of the unknown person(s) as stated hereunder:

“That on the 30th day of December 2022, our client’s vehicle (J-BOXER) was damaged on the Ondo-Akure axis.

“That while our client came to Akure to call a mechanic to fix his vehicle, upon returning to the place where the vehicle was damaged, our client found his vehicle burning, and all efforts to put out the fire proved abortive.

“That after the sudden fire incident that burnt our client’s vehicle along with the bags of rice, our client returned to Akure with deep sorrow in his heart.

“That when our client decided to visit the scene of the fire incident on the 3rd day of January 2023, the burnt vehicle was still there. However, when our client later visited the scene on the 6th day of January 2023 with the staff of his insurance company, the vehicle had been stolen by unknown persons. Our client then went straight to Ondo town to make an oral report at Enu-Owa police station, Ondo.”

The petition further stated, “On getting to the police station, our client was told that the said vehicle had been taken to the Ministry of Works, Akure, by some individuals.

“The officers in charge of the station, with phone number 09030930060, gave our client the phone number of the person who allegedly stole our client’s vehicle.

“When our client called the number given to him by the police, the man directed our client to come to the Ministry of Works, Akure. However, upon arriving there, the man failed to pick up his calls thereafter, and all efforts by our client to determine the whereabouts of his vehicle have proved abortive to date.

“In view of the facts stated in this petition, we humbly request that you use your good office to conduct a dispassionate investigation into our client’s petition and take appropriate action in line with the law against the unknown suspect(s) to recover our client’s vehicle and ensure justice.

“We would appreciate it if crack detectives, fearless and of proven integrity, are assembled to bring the culprit(s) within the warm embrace of the law, as no individual, irrespective of their social status in society, is above the law.”

Speaking about his experience, the rice trader, Afolabi, explained that he had sent his driver to Ore to supply rice when the vehicle caught fire. He expressed surprise that the vehicle was taken from the scene of the incident by unknown individuals.

He further mentioned that after several days of searching, the vehicle was discovered in Abuja because the insurance company insisted on seeing and assessing the burnt vehicle before providing any compensation.

However, he expressed amazement that the suspect was taken to court without his knowledge, despite having all the evidence and the suspect’s confession. Afolabi discovered that the court proceeding was taking place when he was asked to come to the NSCDC office, but he managed to trace them to the court.

He was surprised to find that he had been excluded from the case without his input or informing his lawyer.

The suspect was released on bail, and Afolabi was informed that it was a case against the government. He expressed dissatisfaction with the way the officials of the NSCDC handled the matter.

Therefore, Afolabi is raising the alarm and calling on Nigerians to help him as he has invested a significant amount of money. His lawyer informed him that it is no longer his case and that they are not discussing his vehicle anymore. Afolabi appeals to Nigerians to assist him and intervene in the matter.
