On operation of FRSC

Published by

The essence of establishing the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Nigeria in the year 1988 was to mitigate the incessant road accidents on the major highways

Officials of the FRSC were  found everywhere in the states of the federation, including Abuja, to enable them to control traffic on the public roads. It was apparently noted that those who violated the rules at that time were penalised in order to serve as deterrent to other reckless drivers.

The FRSC workers were law-abiding to the extent that they did not collect any  forms of gratification from any violator of the rules. But in recent times, the operation of the FRSC had metamorphosed into something else. The fact remains that some of them are culpable during check-up of vehicle particulars. There was a year I had nasty experience where I was issued a fine as they claimed that my spare tyre had expired. Many commercial vehicles are driving with confidence on the road without being embarrassed by the FRSC staff despite the fact that they do not have valid vehicle particulars and their vehicles are not even road worthy.

The public need to know if FRSC was solely established for private vehicle owners in the country. Rather than prevent road accidents, they cause lots of accidents on the road in the quest to stop a vehicle that is on a fast lane or moving at high velocity. I therefore implore relevant authorities to checkmate the activities of the FRSC so as to curtail the menace of embarrassment and incessant road accidents they cause on public roads.
