NGO offers free VVF surgery for 66 women, targets 560 in Taraba

The Comprehensive and Inclusive Women’s Health Project in Nigeria (CIWHIN), a non-governmental organisation supported by Christoffel Blending Mission CBM UK, CBM Australia, and CBM New Zealand, has carried out the Vesico Virginal Fistula (VVF) surgery for 66 women in Taraba.

Prof. Sunday Lengmang, the project director of the Evangel VVF Centre at the Binghamton University Teaching Hospital, disclosed this to the Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday in Jalingo. He said the decision was to address the challenges of reproductive health among women and ensure a healthy society.

He also disclosed that the organisation is targeting 560 women and girls, including those with disabilities, for surgical interventions to address Vesico Virginal Fistula (VVF) as well as other reproductive health issues in Taraba.

Prof. Lengmang noted that the centre has trained over 20 nurses, doctors, and midwives on the primary and secondary prevention of obstetric fistulas in the state. Just as he said, 20 community health workers have undergone training to identify high-risk pregnant women and girls and deal with obstetric fistulas in the state, requiring immediate attention.

“Evangel VVF Center’s medical team, which arrived in Jalingo last week, has successfully performed Vesico Virginal Fistula (VVF) surgery for 66 women.

“The Comprehensive and Inclusive Women’s Health Project in Nigeria’s (CIWHIN’s) decision to carry out the free medical services is to help address the challenges of reproductive health amongst women and ensure a healthy society. We are targeting 560 women and girls, including those with disabilities, for surgical interventions to address the Vesico Virginal Fistula (VVF) as well as other reproductive health issues in Taraba.

“To achieve the desired target, we have trained over 20 nurses, doctors, and midwives on primary and secondary prevention of obstetric fistula in Taraba, and we have also trained 20 community health workers to identify high-risk pregnant women and girls dealing with obstetric fistula in the state for immediate attention.

“The centre has also formed and trained 16 community advocacy and response teams (CARTs) to lead advocacy, community awareness, and sensitization at the local government level, as well as identify patients at risk of prolonged obstructed labour, provide follow-up, and link them to hospitals to prevent vesico-viral fistulas from developing.”. The project director disclosed.

Prof. Lengmang identified poverty as a major cause of Vistula amongst women and expressed that the centre is determined to improve the health of women and girls, especially those in their reproductive stages.
