No fewer than 850 confiscated donkey skins worth over N16m have been destroyed in Birnin Kebbi by officials of Nigeria Agriculture Quarantine Services (NAQS) for the second time in two years.
The event took place at the outskirts of the State Capital, under the supervision of its Zonal Commander, Dr Isah Adamu.
The NAQS boss said the contraband was intercepted along Koko-Yauri road en route Lagos following intelligence reports from the local community.
He disclosed that the skins were to be exported to China, saying “but after getting an intelligence report, we acted swiftly according to the dictates of the law.”
He warned the perpetrators of this illicit act that the wrath of the law would never spare any person caught in this business because the agency would work round the clock to ensure donkeys never go into extinction.
The Commander said Nigeria is one of signatories to the charter protecting domestic and wild animals against extinction, pointing out that the government would respect the treaty.
He added that the Agency had been enjoying maximum support from sister security agencies to that effect.
Also speaking, Kebbi State Comptroller of Customs, Hussaini Ahmed Bello, said the fight against crime was everybody’s business.
He urged the general public to feed the Customs with relevant intelligence reports that would lead to the crackdown of offenders in the state.
Ahmed maintained that Customs Service would definitely arraign offenders before the court of law as it had been doing in the past.
He therefore advised members of the public to always engage in meaningful business that would transform their lives within the ambit of the law.
