I am a regular reader of your column so much so that, because of your column, Saturday Tribune has become my companion. I am a 72-year-old. I urinate frequently at night. I went to the hospital and was diagnosed of Prostatitis. Drugs were recommended for me. Even then, I still urinate as before. My worry is the fear of running short of body water if I continue at this rate. Can I use herbs with the prescribed drugs? Please educate me more on how to manage my issue as I hate surgery.

Antibiotics is the most commonly prescribed treatment for prostatitis. Your doctor will choose your medication based on the type of bacteria that might be causing your infection. If you have severe symptoms, you might need intravenous (IV) antibiotics. Prostatitis can also improve with sitting in a warm bath (sitz bath) or the use a heating pad, limiting or avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and spicy or acidic foods, which can irritate your bladder, avoidance of activities that can irritate your prostate, such as prolonged sitting or bicycling as well as drinking plenty of caffeine-free beverages. This will cause you to urinate more and help flush bacteria from your bladder. If your condition does not improve after a few weeks, you may need a review to rule out any other underlying medical issue.
