How to get the best out of church services (I)

Today is Sunday and many Christians go to church. It will amaze you that many go to church for various reasons, legitimate and illegitimate.

Some go as a routine – where else will they be on Sunday morning but in church.  Some go to church because they are obliged to because they live with people who insist going to church on Sunday morning is compulsory. Others go to church to show off their latest fashion.  Some go to honor and worship God.  Others go to ask God to help them. Some go because they have to perform certain responsibilities whether it be preaching , singing or playing a musical instrument.

Some Christians don’t even go to church at all. They flagrantly disobey the command of the Lord not to forsake the assembling of believers.

“And let us consider and give attentive, continuous care to watching over one another, studying how we may stir up (stimulate and incite) to love and helpful deeds and noble activities, Not forsaking or neglecting to assemble together [as believers], as is the habit of some people, but admonishing (warning, urging, and encouraging) one another, and all the more faithfully as you see the day approaching.” Hebrews 19.24-25

Some have stopped attending church because they see imperfection in the church and they will rather stay away. The truth is no church is perfect. As Christians we are working towards perfection so using the excuse of imperfection to abandon church is untenable.

“The day we find the perfect church, it becomes imperfect the moment we join it.” Charles H. Spurgeon

There is no excuse for error but we must not lose sight of the essence of church. The devil is on rampage on the church and as Christians our duty is to stay committed and ensure we are not derailed or distracted from the command of the master.

“The Church is like a great ship being pounded by the waves of life’s different stresses. Our duty is not to abandon ship, but to keep her on her course.” St. Boniface

“Wherever we see the Word of God purely preached and heard, there a church of God exists, even if it swarms with many faults.” John Calvin

Church meetings are no ordinary meetings so we need to get it right. Each time there is a church service God sets out to do certain specific things. There is always a divine agenda for every church service. There is a divine package not just for the corporate body but also for individuals in the service. No church service is ordinary.

“Church attendance is as vital to a disciple as a transfusion of rich, healthy blood to a sick man.” Dwight L. Moody

Next time we will look at certain things we need to do to get the best out of church services.
