A traditional ruler, Oba Shedrack Durojaye Obibeni, and his wife were abducted along Makutu-Idofin road in Kogi West Senatorial District of the state at about 5 p.m. on Monday.
The Chairman of Yagba East Local Government Council, Mr Abdulrasak Asiru, confirmed the incident and described it as “very shocking” and “sad.”
Asiru expressed his disbelief as such an incident had not occurred in the area for almost two years. He stated, “I, as the council chairman and the people of Yagba East are in great shock over the kidnap of our respected Oba and his wife this evening.”
He further mentioned that the local government had a robust security system in place to keep criminal elements away. He believed the kidnapping was well-planned by the culprits, as the Oba and his wife had only left for a short while before the incident occurred.
The council chairman vowed to uncover the perpetrators and rescue the traditional ruler and his wife. He alerted all traditional rulers and community leaders in Okun land to remain vigilant and assist in the search and rescue efforts.
“As we speak, our hunters and vigilante groups are already searching the bushes for the criminals to ensure the swift rescue of our Oba and his wife,” Asiru added.
However, the Kogi Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, stated that he had not yet received a briefing from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the affected area regarding the incident. Ovye-Aya promised to provide updates as soon as he received more information.
