Food palliatives from FG to Kano State damaged by rainfall

The 139 trucks of food from the Federal Government given to Kano State as palliatives to the poorest of poor have been damaged by rainfall.

The food palliatives were kept in the open in the premises of Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO) around Firm Center in Kano

It will be recalled that Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq delivered the consignment, which includes 5,318 metric tonnes of rice; 2,438 metric tonnes of maize; 1,380 metric tonnes of millet and 900 metric tonnes of sorghum, to the state.

These grains were left in an open space at KASCO’s premises without being covered for about two weeks since the consignment was delivered to the state government.

With the rainfall taking place no fewer than two times, the affected grains are now rotten and might be injurious to health if eaten.

It will also be recalled that the state government through its Fundraising Committee had distributed food items and cash sums to 50,000 households in the state and is currently distributing the items to another batch of 50,000 households.

Speaking on the issue, a resident of Kano, Malam Ibrahim Muhammed said it was an irony of life that while some people were facing hunger at this critical period of COVID -19, food items that could ameliorate their sufferings were been beaten by rain without being shared or attended to.

When contacted, the chairman of the State Fundraising Committee and Vice-Chancellor, Bayero University Kano, Professor Mohammed Yahuza Bello explained that the evacuation and distribution of the palliatives were slated to commence on Thursday.

Professor Bello, who led the distribution of the first phase of the state-owned palliatives, said that the committee was constraint by the issue of logistics from government, which he noted was being addressed.
