The management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, on Sunday allayed the fears of members of the public and its staff over the incidence of coronavirus cases in the facility.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu, in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Mr Segun Orisajo, and made available to the Nigerian Tribune in Abeokuta, explained that three suspected cases were managed at the Accident and Emergency complex, last week.
The CMD said there was nothing to worry about, saying the hospital is on top of the situation.
Musa-Olomu said, “As a responsible health institution, we have initiated some anti-panic measures to put the mind of all our people at rest that there is nothing to be afraid of after all.
“As of now, the hospital does not have any coronavirus patient. We will ensure a total adherence to all the measures earlier mentioned in this statement.”
The statement said the remains of the deceased pregnant woman had been released to her husband for committal according to World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.
The other patient which tested positive was said to be in clinically stable condition at an isolation centre in the state.
In view of this development, the Accident and Emergency complex of the hospital had been temporarily shut down to allow for a thorough ongoing decontamination exercise.
The hospital claimed that all the staff that attended to the patients observed the prescribed standard protocols and procedures.
“The Accident and Emergency Complex where the patients were admitted has been temporarily shut down to allow for a thorough on-going decontamination exercise while patients have been properly re-located.
“Similarly, the hospital ambulances and ambulance bay are being decontaminated.
“It should be stated that the hospital embarked on comprehensive fumigation of all buildings in the centre a month ago. The exercise is still on-going,” the statement added.
