Federal School of Statistics graduates charged to seek more knowledge

Published by

FRESH graduates of the Federal School of Statistics, also known as the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), have been charged to pursue their careers to the highest levels.
Dr Kayode Balogun, the rector of the institution who gave the charge at a combined convocation ceremony of the institution held on the institution’s premises, said that the delayed accreditation of the school has led to the late convocation of the graduates from the 2014/2015 academic session till date.
He disclosed that a total of 3,658 students graduated at the convocation ceremony, adding that the convocation was a special one because it combined six graduating sets.
“For several years, graduation ceremonies have been a mirage in the institution. The school runs entirely on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and it takes a lot to conduct convocation yearly,” Balogun said.
While noting that the institution has trained men and women who are scattered across the world in both the private and public sector of the economy, he added that the alumni had equally added value in their unique way as a result of the quality tutelage received while in the institution.
He challenged the graduates to strive to know more, saying “nothing empowers like knowledge; investment in knowledge empowers unusual accomplishments.”
“People run around with failure marks saying ‘we have done all we know’, if all you know does not guarantee you success, then go and know more. The secret of sustainable employment is an undying quest for more and more insight in your field. Know that your only competition is who you were yesterday and what are you doing to improve on yourself,” he stressed.

He encouraged the graduates to cultivate the habit of earning, saving and investing before spending and to avoid negative people around them.
He noted that the school was established in 1948 as a training unit for refresher courses under the Federal Office of Statistics (FOS), now known as National Bureau of Statistics, which is a merger of FOS and National Data Bank.
“In 1961, its training activities were extended to other ministries and parastatals and later upgraded to a full-fledged school in 1971, awarding a middle level statistical officer certificate for a two-year programme in statistics.
“The importance of this certificate cannot be overemphasised as it is acceptable locally and internationally.  Our programmes are under the supervision of the National Board for Technical Education,” he explained.
