The traditionalists at a news conference
Traditional worshippers in Ogun State have urged the State House of Assembly, not to exclude them from being part of the proposed public hearing on a bill titled “Ogun State Traditional Rulers (Installation and Burial Rites) 2020.”
This warning was contained in a communique issued by the Osugbo Remo Parapo and Osugbo Akinle Ijebu on behalf of other traditional worshippers in the state, signed by the President of Osugbo Akinle Ijebu, High Chief Sobowale Adebanjo and six others, a copy which made available to Tribune Online, in Abeokuta.
They contended that the appointment, installation and burial rites of any traditional ruler remained the exclusive rights of traditional worshippers who are in charge of customs and traditions.
The traditional worshippers insisted that their input on the Bill was much needed, so as not to mortgage the traditional institutions for any traditional ruler for any reason.
They noted that the Assembly on 5th of May, 2020, conducted further proceeding and hearing on the Bill, wondering what could have warranted such deliberation during the Coronavirus pandemic.
“We have actually advised the Ogun State House of Assembly, it’s members and leadership through the media, to desist from letting themselves be used as rubber-stamp to legalize illegality as the outcome of the said Bill, if passed, will bring about anarchy, chaos and lead to a free for all situation and breaking down of law and order,” they pointed out.
They also demanded that any deliberations on the proposed bill must be between traditional rulers and traditional worshippers only.
The communique reads in part: “In view of the fact that Obaship institution is under the umbrella of the traditional institutions with the fact that the traditional institutions, where the leadership appointment and installation are attached to the traditions and customs.
“We hereby demand that the said proposed Public Hearing on respect of the Bill on Obas installation and burial rites should be between the Obas and traditional worshippers in the State to the exclusion of all other religions worshippers.
“We demand a 21-day notice to enable our preparation and adequate representation and presentation at the said public hearing
“That the 21-day notice requested shall not run until after the final announcement on permanent COVID-19 lockdown easement by both the federal and state governments, as there are no urgent needs on the hearing of the said bill, as attached to the Obas installation and burial rites during the global pandemic.”
