COVID-19: LASU re-strategises for financial stability, inaugurates committee

As a way of meeting its financial obligations now and in the aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo has constituted a think-tank committee of 21 members to develop strategy for financial sustainability of the institution.

The committee is headed by Professor Ayo Omotayo, former dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and current director of the LASU Centre for Planning, while Mr Aderemi Fashola, a Senior Assistant Registrar (Council Matters) is the secretary. The chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State chapter, Ms Agnes Sesi is one of the members.

Inaugurating the committee on Monday via a virtual meeting, the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun, said the constitution of the committee became imperative in the light of financial challenges that are expected to confront the university in the wake of, and aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.,

According to a statement made available to newsmen by the head of public affairs unit of the university, Mr Ademola Adekoya, the vice chancellor said the composition of the committee cuts across segments of the university from management level to senior and junior academic and non-academic workers.

“We as an institution need to develop strategies that will help address the challenges so that the university will continue to meet its financial obligations and run smoothly after COVID-19,” he stressed.

He listed the terms of reference of the committee, which has only four weeks to deliver, to include, among others, identification of short and long-term income-generating opportunities, development of strategies to implement the identified opportunities to boost the financial capability of the university, identification of possible financial leakages in the system and then to come up with recommendations on any other matter that may be directly or indirectly related to the committee’s assignment.

Responding on behalf of the committee, former dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Banji Fajonyomi, appreciated the management for deeming them fit for the assignment and promised they would deliver.
