Head of Department, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Dr Tolulope Bella-Awusah, has said that anxiety caused by COVID-19 pandemic can be beneficial to human beings.
According to her, anxiety is not an enemy; rather its purpose is to protect people. “Contrary to popular opinion, anxiety is not our enemy. It is the body’s built in mechanism to shield us when faced with an external threat to our life or well being.
“If we didn’t experience anxiety, we would not be motivated to protect ourselves from danger, for example; by washing our hands or practising social distancing during this period,” she explained.
Dr Bella-Awusah added that anxiety should be a short term response, that resolves once the threat is dealt with, either by combating it or running away from such, but that it becomes a problem when it becomes uncontrollable.
The Consultant, who further lamented the havoc being created by the COVID-19 pandemic, maintained that it was necessary for people to cope with the circumstances and ensure their well being.
“COVID-19 remains a constant threat to all of us right now. We do not have to live in a state of constant anxiety but we should try to focus daily on what we can control, not what we can’t.”
She advised: “Limit the amount of time spent following the COVID-19 news. Although, it is important to stay informed, we shouldn’t let our day revolve around COVID-19. If you feel overwhelmed by all the news in the media, it’s okay to step away for a while.”
As part of measures to stay sane during the pandemic period, Dr Bella-Awusah advised that people engage their mind positively by sharing positive stories about COVID-19.
“These could be stories of recovery and bravery. Stay productive by reading and meditating and you could also engage in exercises or other interests.”
