Concrete roads: Cement price crash vindicated Umahi, Ohanaeze tells contractors

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation has expressed its admiration for the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, for his unwavering commitment and resilience in the face of challenges and resistance in his line of duty.

The group in a statement signed by the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, lauded the minister’s dedication to the construction of new Super Highways and the use of Cement technology for road pavement construction, a move approved by President Tinubu.

Recall that the innovative approach, with promises that the roads would last more than 50 years by the Minister of Works, was initially met with resistance from some contractors who cited the high cost of cement as a deterrent.

The statement reads in part “the recent crash in the prices of BUA Cement has vindicated Senator Umahi’s position on Cement technology. The high demand for cement technology has led to a decrease in the prices of cement, eliminating any excuses for not implementing Senator Umahi’s recommendation for Cement Technology.

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo noted that the Nigerian populace’s expectations for durable roads built with cement technology are now feasible. The craving for roads that will last 50 years has made Senator Engineer Dave Umahi a celebrated figure and the pillar of President Tinubu’s administration.

The group also commended Senator Umahi for his peaceful resolution with the staff and workers of the Ministry of Works, referring to the situation as a “Family friction”. His fatherly approach to change workers’ attitudes towards lateness to work has been well received.

“In conclusion, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged President Tinubu to release more funds to the Ministry of Works for smooth operations in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda. They praised Minister Umahi for his tireless efforts and commitment to improving the state of Nigerian roads and infrastructure.
