DOMESTIC airline operators in Nigeria have been advised to synergise by embracing code sharing in their operations in order to help the sector save cost and move forward.
An aviation consultant and former Chief Operating Officer with the Nigerian Aviation Handling company, Mr Hubert Odika who gave this advice in Ikeja, while analysing the state of aviation sector in Nigeria said, synergy among airlines would= lead to their survival.
Odika explained that code sharing among airlines would help domestic airlines to grow financially saying there was no room for waste even as he declared that Nigeria had the market.
Codeshare agreement between two or more airlines allows for a passenger to use the ticket purchased from one airline to fly on another airline that has existing partnership.
Odika while noting that the present situation was not the best of time for airlines to make profits in view of the global trade downturn, added that with the kind of pricing introduced by the airlines that it will be tough for them to make profit.
According to the aviation consultant, the security challenges being faced in the country with unsafe roads will aid the new domestic airlines to break as majority of passengers now prefer to travel by air, saying: “In terms of new airlines springing up, it’s a good idea, we have the traveling population. So, there is nothing wrong in having more airlines”
He commended the new domestic airline operators going for smaller aircraft for operation describing the development as the only way to make the airline business viable in the country hence, calling on airlines to embrace the use of such smaller aircraft.
Speaking on the construction of Airports by some state governments, Odika described it as a good development geared at providing employment, easy access from one state to another, create opportunity for tourism and movement of general cargo
The ability to build state airports he said, will not only make Private Participation work in the states, but make airports profitable.
Odika expressed optimism that state governments constructing airports will not only rely on revenue from passengers but to look around the airports environment to harness areas of revenue generations
