Chika: Nigerian artist who almost won a Grammy alongside Burnaboy, Wizkid

Unknown to many, a Nigerian artist, Chika, was nominated for the best new artist category for the 63rd Annual Grammy award. She almost a Grammy alongside Burnaboy and Wizkid

The 2021 Grammy Awards which recognised the recordings released between September 1, 2019, and August 31, 2020, took place recently.

It was hosted by a South African Trevor Noah and featured a major lineup of performances from Bad Bunny, BTS, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and more, with some playing live and others in pre-recorded segments. 

The 24-year-old hip hop artist, Jane Chika Oranika, popularly known as Chika is a rapper, model, actress, songwriter and poet.

She is of Nigerian descent. Chika was one out of the eight nominees that made it to the best new artist category of the 2021 Grammys.

She is the youngest of her Nigerian-American parents’ three daughters. She is of Igbo origins and was raised in the Pentecostal faith.

Chika has more than 20 songs to her credit, both her singles and featured songs. She first garnered attention on social media before signing to Warner Records in 2019. The following year, she was included in XXL’s 2020 Freshman Class and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. 

The 2021 Grammy awards which consist of 83 categories took place amid a strange, socially-distanced awards season. It was postponed from its original January date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The best new artist category of the 2021 Grammys was won by Megan Thee Stallion.
