Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has stated that his administration is actively working on a sustainable plan to address and clear a debt of N359 billion, which comprises arrears of pensions, gratuities, and salaries owed to workers inherited by the state.
Governor Alia, speaking in Abuja, emphasised that deliberate efforts are being made to increase internally generated revenue (IGR), a significant portion of which will be allocated to paying off the accumulated debt, thereby empowering workers who rightfully deserve their wages.
“You will be shocked to hear that some people in the local government were owed for up to five years. The least we recorded were people who were owed up to four months.
This is why the debts have accumulated to N359 billion in my tenure and on the heads of Benue State,” the governor informed reporters.
According to Governor Alia, “Since we came into office, I am aware that Benue State is burdened with a debt totalling over N359 billion, covering pensions, gratuities, salaries, and arrears, both foreign and domestic.
“What we’re aiming to do is to explore options for renegotiation and improve our financial standing to move forward with the state’s development.”
Governor Alia explained that his administration is committed to paying state workers their salaries on the 25th of every month, fulfilling a pledge made since he assumed office.
“For now, we have ensured the consistent payment of salaries each month. If you are a staff member of the state or local government in Benue State, I can assure you that I will check your account on the 25th of every month.
Your alert will confirm your payment, and this practice is here to stay, as it has been over the last four months.

“So, the state is determined not to owe anything to anyone. Additionally, for those retiring since 2023, we have made it a priority that once you retire, it must not take up to four months before you receive your gratuities and pension.
By doing this, we’re gradually addressing the backlog of arrears that exist. In fact, we have already initiated action on that.
“We’re working to boost internally generated revenue (IGR). Therefore, as it is increased each month, a portion of it will go directly towards the arrears of pensioners and salaries,” Governor Alia added.
