Bauchi govt, OCP Africa train 5,000 farmers in modern farming techniques

RENOWN world producer of fertliser, OCP Africa as part of its contribution to cushion the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on farmers in partnership with the Bauchi state government recently trained 5,000 farmers on new farming techniques under its new project to assist farmers to get farming inputs at a subsidized rate.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the training, Commissioner for Agriculture in the state, Sama’ila Adamu Burga, commended the OCP for the initiative of training the farmers, saying that the intervention will alleviate thier pligths, particularly with the negative effects of the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Under the COVID-19 project, 5,000 farmers will benefit from the project who were carefully selected from the three senatorial districts of the state. After the training, 10,000 bags of fertilizer will be distributed and each farmer will get two bags”

“The project will help to educate farmers on mordern farming techniques so as to ensure bumper harvest through the provision of fertiliser and other farming inputs.

“It will also assist them to produce uptakers that will buy the commodity from the farmers after harvest. I want to commend OCP at this juncture, for opening stock shops in all locations where farmers will find all that is needed to boost their farming activities,” he said.

Also speaking during the training, a representative of OCP Africa, Alhaji Idris Adamu Azare, said that the programme is currently active in 10 states of the federation, adding that in Bauchi State, farmers were selected from three local government areas of the state to benefit from the programme.

Adamu, said the local governments selected include: Alkaleri in Bauchi South, Ningi in Bauchi Central and Shira Yana in Bauchi South just as he stated that farming inputs will be sold to farmers at a subsidised price.

He also revealed that agricultural experts have been trained to train farmers on how to make judicious use of the agricultural inputs, adding that all the data of the farmers will be captured for proper monitoring of their activities.
