Bauchi State Project Office of Agro-climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) has embarked on community sensitisation campaigns to the Northern riparian communities of Hadejia/Jama’are River Basin in Six Local Government Areas of the state.
The State Project Coordinator, Dr Ibrahim Kabir, represented by the Social Livelihood Officer and the Forestry Officer, Mahmud Bose and Nasiru Umar respectively at the communities sensitisation campaigns, gave an overview of ACReSAL project to the understanding of the communities.
The objective of the exercise was to introduce ACReSAL Project to the Communities and to identify their livelihood activities around the river bank, their source of livelihood and challenges as well as potential livelihood activities that ACReSAL will provide additional support.
The livelihood activities identified in these communities are peculiar to each other such as wet and irritation farming activities both crops, vegetables, fishing and sugarcane farming, while women in the communities are into petty trading and small ruminants farming, groundnuts processing, sewing, knitting, weaving among other things.
Also, the communities were identified with some challenges such as siltation of dams, soil erosion, deforestation, flooding, desert encroachment among other problems.
Communities visited during the sensitization exercise appreciated ACReSAL for the visit and expressed optimism that the project will address their challenges, pledged to give all necessary cooperation for the success of the project in the state.
The communities visited are; Gamawa, Itas – Gadau, Jama’are, Katagum, Shira and Zaki local government areas of the state as contained in a statement by the Communications unit of the project.
