2023: Bayo Lawal picked as Makinde’s running mate

Chairman, Oyo State Housing Corporation, Mr Bayo Lawal has been picked as Governor Seyi Makinde’s running mate for the 2023 governorship election.

Lawal’s endorsement came at a meeting held at the Oyo government house, Ibadan, with Governor Seyi Makinde and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the Oke-Ogun zone in attendance.

Lawal’s emergence was affirmed after there was no dissenting voice to his nomination at the meeting. Some Oke-Ogun leaders said they had to choose Lawal to prevent a vacuum after the incumbent Rauf Olaniyan defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Prior to Tuesday’s meeting with a larger caucus of Oke-Ogun leaders of the PDP, the governor had earlier met with a smaller caucus of the party leaders where Lawal’s name was agreed upon.
Lawal, from Kisi, Irepo local government, is from the same Irepo/Oorelope/Olorunsogo federal constituency as the incumbent deputy governor, Rauf Olaniyan.
Some Oke-Ogun PDP leaders present at the meeting were: Michael Adegbite(Iwajowa); Jimoh Adediran (Irepo); Ali Oyedeji (Kajola); Jacob Adetoro (Olorunsogo); Kunmi Mustapha (Iseyin); Hosea Agboola (Itesiwaju); Yakub Oladoja (Oorelope); Siju Lawal (Saki East).
Also present were Amidu Gbadamosi, Adeniyi Adebisi, Gbenga Babalola, Niyi Farinto, Nasiru Salam, Agada Isaac, Alidodo Oyedeji among others.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the duo of Michael Adegbite and Gbenga Babalola saluted the governor for ensuring that the governor’s next running mate also emerges from the same Oke-Ogun zone as the incumbent Rauf Olaniyan.
Similarly, the duo of incumbent Chairman, Oyo PDP, Dayo Ogungbenro and his predecessor, Kunmi Mustapha said exigency demanded the emergence of a new running mate for Makinde after Olaniyan defected to the APC.
The chosen one, Bayo Lawal, in his remarks, said he was overwhelmingly accepted as none of the party leaders opposed his nomination at Tuesday’s meeting.
He pleaded with party leaders in the Oke-Ogun zone and across the state to give maximum cooperation to the Makinde administration.
