Yuletide: Animal protection activist gives to deceased soldiers’ widows

Published by

Founder, Animal Protection Organization of Nigeria (APON), Joseph Odika met up with widows of the deceased Nigerian soldiers at 81 Battalions and Brigade Engineering Unit at Mokola Army Barracks, Ibadan, recently to share food items to the widows in preparation for the Christmas celebration.

Joseph who was there in company of some friends said: “I grew up with the understanding that touching lives is blessing and not material wealth and also with the understanding that we can only grow as people by supporting one another”.

According to Joseph, giving has always being his lifestyle and that’s why he doesn’t own any properties yet. ‘”I am not saying owning houses is bad but I would rather share what I have with the needy knowing fully-well that I will only take good deeds with me out of this world and leave material things behind,” he said.

The acclaimed farmer and social change advocate said the cassava flakes known locally as ‘garri’ was produced from his farm at Orisunbare village in Oyo State, Nigeria. He gave part of it to the widows and sold some to complement for rice and other food items distributed to the widows.

According to him, the palliative which was given out to the widows was to flag-off a foundation in memory of his Late Father (Sir Peter Odika), which his family named Peter Odika Memorial Foundation. The foundation was founded to keep alive the legacy of his late father of giving to the poor. The foundation will prioritise women and children as direct beneficiaries of the foundation.

In a welcome address and appreciation for the goodwill extended to the widows, the commander of The brigade Engineering, Brigadier A.G Audu, thanked Joseph Odika for remembering the widows whose husband died in active service, fighting to death to ensure a peaceful Nigeria. He also assured the widows that the command will not fail to support them especially at this time of Yuletide.

Speaking on behalf of the Widows, the Magajia of the cantonment expressed her gratitude owing to the fact that not every rich people out there thinks like Joseph Odika. He then pray that God blesses Joseph Odika so that he can touch more lives.
