ALL is set for the Yoruba World Congress (YWC) to commence a mentorship programme for 300 young university or polytechnic graduates globally who are from the 10 Yoruba-speaking states in Nigeria.
The aim of the mentorship, which is scheduled to last six months, according to the body, is to guide the youths towards professional development that would put them at the centre of personal and societal development.
The initiative was announced in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, at the end of a youth event organised by the body last week.
Shedding light on the programme, the secretary-general of the organisation, Professor Anthony Kila, said under the scheme, YWC would link 50 accomplished Yoruba professionals from various sectors of the economy and countries around the world with participants to be chosen from the 10 states.
The 10 states, according to him, are all the six Southwest states (Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Lagos) as well as Kogi, Kwara, Edo and Delta.
Kila explained that the initiative would help to place young graduates who are 35 years and below from these states at the centre of education, empowerment and engagement in national development.
“It would also help them to progress steadily in the areas of employment, entrepreneurship and further studies,” he added.
Kila also said while participants under the scheme would be nominated by YWC-affiliated groups and leaders from across the world, all intending participants, including mentors, would join first online using the YWC website.
Also speaking at the Ibadan event, Akogun Tola Adeniyi, who was a keynote speaker, said, “Graduates are expected to play a leading role across all strata of endeavours and they must therefore equip themselves with requisite knowledge and skills.”
In his own remarks, also according to Kila, the leader of YWC, Professor Banji Akintoye, urged youths to be creative and innovative by making tangible things out of almost nothing in their environment for their well-beings and societal advancement.
