World Environment Day: Sokoto government to plant one million trees

As part of plans to celebrate this year’s World Environment Day, Sokoto State government has earmarked about one million trees to be planted in some selected places within the metropolis.

The state commissioner for environment, Honourable Nura Tangaza, stated this on Wednesday while flagging off the exercise at the headquarters of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in the state.

He said the government of Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto led administration in the state is determined to fight deforestation in the state.

“We are working on how to get a minimum of one million trees planted in the state as part of the plan of the state government to make the state conducive for residents.

“The target is to ensure seventy per cent of these trees are economic trees which will apart from making the environment conducive for the people also benefit the state and the residents economically in the future.

“This administration also frowns at the cutting of trees indiscriminately anywhere in the state, before anyone is allowed to cut any tree, such persons must abide by the laydown procedure of the state government.”

Also speaking in his remarks, the state commandant of NSCDC who was represented by his deputy, DIC Aliyu Gandi, commended the state government and its partners on the project.

He expressed satisfaction that the command is among the beneficiaries of the exercise.

He however assured that the command through some of its departments will ensure the trees planted within the premises are nurtured to serve it’s purpose.

The programme which was supported by UNICEF also included a media interaction with journalists in the state can key in the program to ensure the success of tree planting in the state.
