In commemoration of this year’s World Animal Day, the Animal Protection Organization of Nigeria (APON) has, as usual, marked the celebration in a dual engagement campaign system.
“As today is very significant to raise awareness about the plights of animals and how best we can proffer solutions to mitigate or eradicate animal suffering, we engaged the public about why it is vital to keep beaches free from debris and other litter in the city of Lagos.
“We also engaged school pupils and the public about laying hens welfare via leafleting, strategic board campaign and classroom campaign in the city of Ibadan,” said Mr Joseph Odika, initiator of the Nigerian organization.
He also described the support provided by the Centre for Effective Altruism on the ongoing laying hen’s campaign against bird caging as a good step forward towards the right direction as many people are now aware of why it’s important to promote a free-range poultry system as against the archaic battery cage confinement.
On October 4 every year, World Animal Day is celebrated across the world. It’s a special day celebrated particularly among animal rights and protection organizations.
In 1931, World Animal Day was globalised at a world animal protection organisation conference in Florence, Italy. They unanimously accepted the proposal to celebrate 4 October as World Animal Day.
