Urgently pass electoral act to save lives during election, group urges NASS

Published by

The National Assembly has been asked to ensure the safety of Nigerians during elections by ensuring that it passes the Electoral Act amendment in order to reduce the incidence of avoidable deaths.

Executive Director, Speak out, Mr Kenneth Eze, who carried out a peaceful demonstration outside the constitution review centre, said the National Assembly owed Nigerians an urgent passage of the Electoral Amendment Act.

His words: “Nigerians are beginning to doubt the authenticity and validity of the ongoing Constitutional Review process.

“The reason is simple, it is only when you are faithful in the little things that you will be faithful at the other and we can commit a bigger assignment like this to your hand.

“We have seen that the National Assembly need to ensure the passage of the Electoral Act amendment as a matter of urgency. This is related to security.

“We all know the position that we are faced with today in relation to insecurity, the passage of the Electoral Act will ensure non-manual transmission of the result. Manual transfer if result creates room for attacks to collect the result for all sorts of compromise.

“It exposes the carrier to assault, molestation attack and other security issues, many of the victims are youths, from INC, security agents who are dear to the nation.

“We want INEC to rely on section 50 of the Constitution which gives INEC the right to decide what mode to use for an election which has been solved in the electoral Act.

“It should be constitutionally mandated that election result should be transmitted electronically so that we can curtail the loss of precious lives unduly.”
