Unilorin has 36 patents — VC

Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), says the university has produced a total of 36 patents geared towards impacting society and developing the nation.

Speaking at the 37th and 38th combined convocation ceremonies of the university in Ilorin on Saturday, the VC said that the patents were produced in collaboration with the federal government through the National Office of Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NATOP) in Abuja to boost research and innovation.

“With this, the University of Ilorin is one of the highest contributing institutions to patenting in Nigeria,” he said.

Professor Egbewole mentioned that the patents were produced in various disciplines, including medicine, agriculture, engineering, and information technology, among others.

“The number of patents in the various disciplines is as follows: Medical 5, Agriculture 5, Engineering 16, Food 1, Information Technology 4, Petrochemical 3, Defence 1, Energy 1.

“These various patents are currently being positioned for commercialization, as our research aims to impact society and develop our community,” he said.

He explained that the university is committed to fostering a culture of excellence, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.

Professor Egbewole noted that the graduates of the institution are trained with a strong foundation for making meaningful contributions to nation-building.

He advised the graduates to maintain good behaviour and continue seeking knowledge at all times.

A total of 10,757 graduates were awarded first degrees, diplomas, postgraduate diplomas, and PhDs during the university’s 2021–2022 convocation ceremony.
