Amid growing concerns over water scarcity, food insecurity, and the looming spectre of climate change, the international community united at the Food+ Forum during the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) in New York City.
The forum brought together policymakers, academics, and industry leaders to address these challenges.
The Food+ Forum at UNGA78 served as a catalyst for vital discussions surrounding global food and water security. Key topics included the resilience of agriculture and fishing industries in the face of climate change and the vulnerability of global food and water systems during times of conflict.
The forum explored lessons learned from previous disruptions and examined how policy initiatives and collaborative partnerships can nurture robust food and water systems capable of withstanding geopolitical shifts and climate-related shocks.
This significant session featured two pivotal panels: “Tilling the Future: Transformational Solutions in Agriculture” and “Reviving the Earth: Regenerative Agriculture and a Sustainable Future.” Speakers included Dr Agnes Kalibata, President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA); Andrew Sollinger, CEO and Publisher of Foreign Policy; Hanneke Faber, President of Unilever Nutrition; Mark Isbell, Partner at Isbell & Generation Farms; Sam Kass, Partner at Acre Venture Partners; and Maggie Lake, Founder of Maggie Lake Media.
Dr Agnes Kalibata, President of AGRA and Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the first United Nations Food Systems Summit, emphasised the need for a distinct transformational plan to address the food requirements of 65% of the population dependent on agriculture while also creating employment opportunities.
She underscored the pivotal role of climate change in exacerbating hunger and the importance of building resilient food systems capable of withstanding its impacts.
Throughout the forum, several key insights emerged. Intra-Africa trade in food currently stands at 15%, showcasing the untapped potential for the continent to achieve self-sufficiency and foster food product trade.
Additionally, the critical role of climate change in exacerbating hunger was underscored, emphasising the need to construct resilient food systems capable of withstanding its consequences.
Sam Kass, partner at Acre Venture Partners, underscored the urgency of addressing climate change, warning of the imminent risks to global food stability and security.
Kass highlighted the potential consequences, including food scarcity, political instability, forced migration, and conflicts, all stemming from the decline of essential commodities.
The Food+ Forum served as a platform for the international community to engage in constructive dialogue, collaborate on innovative solutions, and pave the way for a more secure and sustainable global food and water future.
