Trafficked Bauchi children: Gov Bala urges against ethnoreligious colouration

Published by

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir, has stressed that the recent rescue of the seven abducted children in the state has no ethnoreligious colouration, and so it must not be used as such by overzealous religious bigots.

The governor therefore warned residents of the state, especially those who are in the habit of using such opportunities to start crises, not to use the issue to create confusion that may lead to mistrust among Nigerians across the country.

The call was made following the apprehension created by the arrest of the suspected masterminds of the abductions and trafficking of the seven children, who are all indigenes of the state.

Bala Mohammed made the assertion while formally receiving the abducted children from the state police command at Government House Bauchi on Wednesday after their repatriation from Kano State.

The governor expressed concern over what he described as a mischievous business by dubious and devilish persons who want to tarnish the good image of the state, explaining that such acts can be found in every tribe across the country.

According to him, “Don’t ascribe it to any religion or tribe; we have the good and the bad in every tribe and religion.

Though the suspects are mostly Christians and Ibos, that does not mean all the rest are bad. They are our brothers and sisters. Let the law take its full cause.”

He added, “That was the reason I fought against ethnic profiling of Fulani as criminals; you don’t just put everyone in the bad just because of one bad person.”

He further expressed disappointment at the nonchalant attitude of some parents towards not adequately monitoring the affairs of their children, leading to rampant cases of abduction.

The governor charged religious and traditional leaders to educate parents on their parental obligations as enshrined in religious books and social obligations.

According to him, “We will engage religious leaders to use the Friday Jummaat prayers and Sunday Church worship to talk about the roles and responsibilities of godly parenting.”

He also ordered the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development to immediately enrol all the rescued children in schools and announced the donation of N1 million to each of the seven rescued children as an endowment for their upkeep.

The Governor praised the efforts of the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies, as well as the Kano State Governor, for their support.

He assured that his administration would provide the police with all the necessary support and tools to enable them to perform their duties.

The governor also said that his administration has signed the Child Act to further protect children from all kinds of violations.

He called the actions of the abductors and traffickers “insulting to the state” and accused parents and society of not ensuring the proper upbringing of their children.

The governor also said that his administration will continue to support security agents in ensuring sustainable peace and stability in the state.

Earlier, the State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Auwal, who facilitated the repatriation process from the Kano State Police Command, informed the governor that all the suspects have been arrested and investigations are ongoing.

The commissioner of the Bauchi State Police, CB Awal Musa Mohammed, while handing over the abducted children, said that initially, there were seven, six from Bauchi, and only one from Kano.

He appreciated the support of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the quick response of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed regarding the case, saying that the investigation has so far revealed those who are behind the treacherous acts.

The children have already reunited with their families, while the governor donated N7 million, N1 million each, for the maintenance and upkeep of the rescued children.
