I am a 42-year-old mother of two young children. I was shocked when the doctor told me that I had reached menopause. This was because I had missed my Menstruation for 6 consecutive months and I am not pregnant. My surprise stemmed from the fact that my two elder sisters who are 46 and 44 years are still seeing their menses. Kindly advise me in case my problem is something else.

Menopause is the time that marks the end of one’s menstrual cycles. Its usually diagnosed after an individual has gone 12 months without a menstrual period. Although menopause is likely to occur around the same time among sisters and mothers, it can happen in your 40s or 50s with the average at 52.
Since you have only gone 6 months without a menstrual period, I will advise that you consult a medical specialist (Gynaecologist) at the nearest Specialist or Teaching hospital to you for a second opinion.
